What is health psychology?

What is a presurgical evaluation, and why is it needed?
These evaluations help assess psychological factors that may impact surgical outcomes, guide coping strategies, and provide recommendations to support post-surgical recovery.
How can I schedule an appointment?
Appointments can be requested online, or patients may call our office to schedule. Healthcare providers can submit referrals online, fax them, or upload them via the "Refer Your Patient" tab. Additionally, patients and providers can reach out via our contact form or live chat, available at the bottom of each page during business hours.
What insurances do you accept?
We are in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, TriWest, and Optum (United Healthcare, Oxford, Oscar - for therapy only). Contact us to confirm coverage.
How does the PSYPACT agreement affect your services?
PSYPACT (Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact) is an agreement that allows licensed psychologists to provide telehealth services across multiple states without needing a separate license in each one. This means that if you live in a PSYPACT-participating state, you can receive care from our psychologists remotely, even if we are not physically located in your state. PSYPACT makes it easier to access specialized psychological services from the comfort of your home.
Is health psychology only for those with medical conditions?
No. While health psychology is often used to support individuals managing medical conditions, it is also beneficial for stress management, mental health concerns, and overall well-being.
How long does treatment typically last?
Presurgical evaluations are usually completed in one session, though some cases may require two sessions. Therapy is brief and focused, typically ranging from a single session to 8–10 sessions, depending on individual needs.
What can I expect during a session?
For a presurgical evaluation, the process begins with a call with our intake coordinator to determine if our services are a good fit for you. Before your appointment, you will receive questionnaires by email, which can be lengthy and must be completed in advance. The evaluation itself includes a one-hour interview with a provider, where you’ll discuss your background, medical history, mental health, work, and surgery-related goals.
For therapy related to presurgical care, the first session focuses on information gathering, getting to know one another, and setting goals. Additional sessions last 30 minutes to an hour and are structured as conversational discussions aimed at working toward your goals.
Are you available for in-person appointments?
Dr. Young only provides virtual evaluations and therapy, primarily focusing on presurgical evaluations and brief therapy. Dr. Abrego offers both in-person and virtual services. In-person appointments with Dr. Abrego are available in San Antonio, TX, in the Medical Center area.
